Many Autistic employees may benefit from flexible work schedules with part-time opportunities. They may also benefit from having the opportunity to work flexible hours as other barriers such as mental health concerns or access to transportation may impact full-time work schedules.
Autistic employees may also benefit from more frequent breaks due to sensory differences, emotional regulation challenges, or limited sustained attention to a task. Providing a quiet break space when feeling overwhelmed may help increase productivity. Some individuals may work more efficiently with frequent shorter breaks (i.e., 3 x 5-minute breaks vs 1 x 15-minute break). Legally in Alberta Employers must provide 1x 30-minute break for every 5 hours of work or 2 x 15-minute breaks.
